Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, located around 13 kilometers (roughly 8 miles) off the coast of Wick and able to power 450,000 homes, was officially opened earlier this week.

Known as the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm, the project cost £2.6 billion (around $3.1 billion) to build, and took a decade of planning. According to a Beatrice news release, the project contributed £460 million to the Scottish economy during construction, which was part of a larger £1.3 billion contribution to the United Kingdom’s economy.

Featuring 84 Siemens Gamesa turbines, the Beatrice wind farm totals 588 MW installed capacity, also providing 90 ongoing operational roles. According to the BBC, the wind farm is Scotland’s largest source of renewable energy.

Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, located around 13 kilometers (roughly 8 miles) off the coast of Wick and able to power 450,000 homes, was officially opened earlier this week.

SSE Renewables spearheaded development, construction and operation, working in collaboration with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Red Rock Power Limited. SSE noted that the project was completed £100 million under budget.

“The successful commissioning of Beatrice marks the end of a 10-year journey. In that time thousands of people have, directly and indirectly, contributed to the development and construction of this world-class renewable generation site,” said Jim Smith, Managing Director of lead development partner SSE Renewables.

Onshore construction began in May 2016, in Moray, and offshore construction began the following April. The first turbine was installed with power exported last July, and the final turbine was installed in mid-May. The offshore wind farm is slated to have a lifespan of 25 years.

“Completing the offshore construction at Beatrice is a testament to the capabilities of SSE Renewables and our project partners. Delivering one of Scotland’s largest ever private investments on time and under budget is a fantastic achievement given its complexity and we would like to thank everyone who has helped us make the project a reality,” Smith said when the last turbine went up in May.

According to the BBC, currently the world’s largest offshore wind farm is Walney, located off the coast of Cumbria, and is able to power 600,000 homes.
