The Township of Grosse Ile is seeking contractors to repair and paint the historic Grosse Ile Lighthouse in Grosse Ile, Michigan.

The Grosse Ile lighthouse was built in 1906 and stands 40 feet tall. The Grosse Isle Historical Society provides tours of the eight-sided lantern room, which was deactivated in 1963. The structure recently sustained damage in February, when the structure was nearly overturned by ice floes.

Bids are due July 30.

Scope of Work

The project includes repainting the entire exterior of the historic lighthouse, including the wood clapboard siding, ornamental wood trim and brackets, concrete lighthouse foundation above pier, metal grilles at foundation vents, metal hoods at lantern vents, wood doors and windows, wood stairs at the lighthouse entrance and the copper roofing of the first story cornice.

Metal surfaces will require two coats of an alkyd rust-inhibitive metal primer that includes pigments such as iron oxide, zinc, oxide, chromate or zinc phosphate for application on all existing metal components. Bare metal surfaces of existing components are to receive primer.

Exterior surfaces will require removal of loose and deteriorated paint with manual sanding or an orbital sander. Wood exterior surfaces will require cleaning with a mild detergent and low-pressure water and natural bristle brush-cleaning. Wood surfaces will be coated with an exterior-grade, oil-based primer compatible with finish coats by the same manufacturer. All exterior surfaces will then receive two coats of an exterior alkyd enamel/oil.

Interior surfaces will require removal of deteriorated shellac caused by moisture accumulation with terry-cloth rags soaked in denatured alcohol. Surfaces then will require medium grit sanding and re-staining areas of bare wood before application of two light coats of Shellac.

Existing coatings may contain lead. Containment is required.

Owner-approved manufacturers include: Benjamin Moore, California Paints, Kelly-Moore, PPG Paints, Sherwin-Williams, Zinsser or an approved equivalent.
