The portal is now open to share ideas in the Carbon Footprint Challenge, a global initiative by the UNITECH International Society, an endeavor to bridge the gap between the corporate and the academic world.

Companies such as Covestro and Evonik, as well as nine top European universities, are partnered in the initiative.

What Is It

The challenge invites students and young professionals (within the first five years of a career) from all over the world to share ideas to fight climate change on an open innovation online platform.

The portal is now open to share ideas in the Carbon Footprint Challenge, a global initiative by the UNITECH International Society, an endeavor to bridge the gap between the corporate and the academic world.

“The chemical industry in particular needs to become even more sustainable and is looking for fresh ideas,” said Covestro CEO Markus Steilemann. “We don’t develop them on our own – therefore, we rely on the best minds bringing in open-mindedness and ingenuity.”

The portal is open until July 7 for individuals and teams to contribute ideas that can decrease carbon footprint of manufacturing, industrial processes as well as for products throughout their entire value chain.

After all ideas are submitted, a jury will select 25 that will advance to the next phase, which will group ideas into teams that will further develop.

At the end of July, the jury will select the top five teams to pitch their innovation at the final event, held Sept. 6 and 7, in Zurich, Switzerland.

The winning team will be awarded up to CHF 10,000 ($10,089) to support further development of the idea.

“Again and again, the Carbon Footprint Challenge brings a broad diversity of people, ideas and energies together to address the key issue of our times,” said David Ward, Secretary General of Unitech International.

Last year, the finalists’ ideas of the Carbon Footprint Challenge ranged from new fiber materials made from coconuts to power and freshwater systems for small islands. Registrations and teams were seen from 80 countries.
