A new research project for waterborne raw materials is being conducted by the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences at the Technical University of Cologne (Köln, Germany) in collaboration with Covestro (Pittsburgh).

Titled “Applied Research on Disperse Colloidal Polymers,” the research project is slated to cost around 600,000 euros (roughly $672,000) and be funded over a period of three years by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

About the Research

Starting in 2017, Covestro began commissioning new production facilities for polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) and now holds a world-leading position in the research, development, process technologies and supply of the specific polymer, according to the company.

A new research project for waterborne raw materials is being conducted by the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences at the Technical University of Cologne (Köln, Germany) in collaboration with Covestro (Pittsburgh).

Traditionally used as binders or formers in paint for automobile refinishing as well as in wood, floor, tile, glass fibers and furniture paints, PUDs consist of mostly water with polyurethane keenly spread throughout the substance.

In hopes that the new research will aid in further development of these dispersions, Jan Wiekard, an expert on PUDs at Covestro, says, “The goals of the project are the optimization of manufacturing processes, an improved understanding of structure-property relationships and the development of new applications for the dispersions.”

“We focus on application-oriented research of PUDs and rapid market launch of new products to meet increasing requirements.”

With growing capacity increases, the company hopes the research will enable the company to be able to meet the global demand from the coatings and adhesive industry.

“Paint and adhesive manufacturers all over the world are increasingly opting to replace solvent-based products with more sustainable aqueous systems such as PUDs, provided they have the same excellent properties,” says Michael Friede, global head of the Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties segment at Covestro.

“Our comprehensive range opens up many applications in a wide variety of industries. This will create growth opportunities and strengthen the competitiveness of our customers.”
