The United States Department of Energy has recently announced that through an Advanced Building Construction with Energy-Efficient Technologies and Practices Funding Opportunity, it will be offering up to $33.5 million for the early-stage research and development of advanced building construction techniques.

The opportunity aims to reduce energy usage in commercial and residential buildings through the development of deep energy retrofits and new construction technologies. The agency’s goals include reducing space heating, cooling, water heating and ventilation system energy loads by 75% and doubling energy efficiency in buildings.

According to the DOE, the Funding Opportunity Announcement inspires these new techniques by aiming its goals at three topics:

  • Integrated Building Retrofits: Focuses on finding ways to achieve more affordable energy savings through integrating technology in existing buildings (e.g. insulated panels, combined heating and cooling, and hot water systems).
  • New Construction Technologies: Focuses on improving affordability, scalability and the performance of energy efficient building systems and methods in building design, construction and installation work.
  • Advanced Technology Integration: Focuses on the authentication of innovative technologies, building practices, workforce training and service delivery methods.

In touting whole building designs, the agency is also considering passive solar approaches like using certain types of windows and creating high-performance envelopes, in addition to landscaping that would offer efficient shading.

For those interested in receiving funding for energy-efficient building research, grant candidates must submit a concept paper by June 10 in order to be eligible to submit a full application on Aug. 12.

Interested candidates can obtain required application documents and listen to a playback of the informational webinar mentioned in the FOA, here.
