Global high-performance polymers company Covestro (Pittsburgh) recently announced the retirement of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Jerry MacCleary, effective Dec. 31.

MacCleary’s History

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, MacCleary has been with Covestro for 40 years, working in diverse positions within sales, marketing, general management and strategic leadership departments.

MacCleary first joined Covestro in 1979 as an accountant. Through his assorted set of positions, MacCleary was named head of the North American Polyurethanes business in 2004 and continued to maintain this position even after taking the helm at Covestro in 2012.

Global high-performance polymers company Covestro (Pittsburgh) recently announced the retirement of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Jerry MacCleary, effective Dec. 31.

In addition to serving the polyurethane sectors, MacCleary serves as a chairman for the American Chemistry Council’s Board of Directors and Sustainability Committee, and is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Manufacturers and Executive Committee for the Society of Chemical Industry.

In a statement, MacCleary says, “I’ve had a long, fulfilling career with this company, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished over the years.

“Covestro has a vibrant new culture, a strong, diverse leadership team and a promising future here in the region—I can’t think of a better time to retire. Saying goodbye to my Covestro family won’t be easy, but I’m looking forward to starting this next chapter of my life.”

Throughout the totality of his career, MacCleary has assisted the North American organization through various transformative changes, including the company’s separation from Bayer AG, establishing itself as an independent company in 2015.

Once appointed to CEO in 2018, MacCleary led Covestro into building a new MDI plant in Baytown, Texas—a $1.7 billion investment. At the time, not only was the investment a big win for the region, but it was also the largest single investment in Covestro’s history.

MacCleary championed many other sustainability, innovation, diversity and inclusion initiatives outside of the company as well. He has played a leading role in Covestro’s collaboration with the Pittsburgh Penguins' and Carnegie Mellon University's initiative, “Rethink the Rink.” Currently, MacCleary continues to co-chair “CEOs for Sustainability,” a Sustainable Pittsburgh enterprise that encourages local businesses to implement more sustainable practices.

MacCleary also serves on the Board of Directors for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Imani Christian Academy. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, co-chair of the Executive Committee for The Advanced Leadership Initiative and a member of the Board of Directors for EQT.

“Our team, our business and our reputation in North America have thrived under Jerry’s leadership, and we’re grateful for his many contributions over the years,” said Markus Steilemann, CEO, Covestro AG.

“While Jerry will retire at the end of 2019, the impact he’s had on our culture, community and industry will be felt for years to come.”
