Earlier this week, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi opened what is being touted as the world’s widest suspension bridge, according to reports. The structure crosses the Nile north of central Cairo.

According to Reuters, the endeavor is one of a number that is military-led and intended to both improve infrastructure and create jobs. A regional director from the Guinness Book of World Records attending the opening confirmed that the Rod al-Farag Axis Bridge is the widest suspension bridge in the world.

The bridge has six lanes running in each direction, measuring 67.3 meters (roughly 222 feet) across. According to Ahram Online, the bridge spans 540 meters. A chairman from Arab Contractors, the developer responsible for the project, received a certificate in recognition of the bridge’s width.

According to the Egypt Independent, roughly 1 million cubic meters of concrete, along with 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) of steel wire were used. The bridge has 160 suspension cables.

“The Guinness Book of Records has recorded thousands of global achievements in various categories over the past six decades,” said Regional Director of the Guinness Book of Records in the Middle East and North Africa, Talal Omar.

“The common factor of all these categories is the distinctive human element. This element seeks excellence, which we have seen through the achievement we have witnessed today in Egypt.”

The bridge, built by around 4,000 engineers, technicians and other workers, was constructed with the intent to shift traffic from east of Cairo to Alexandria Desert Road, Matruh, and al-Alamein highway away from the center of Cairo.

Back in 2014, Sisi ordered the building of a national road network totaling 8,200 kilometers in length.
