The Florida Institute of Technology is to host the American Society of Civil Engineers’ National Concrete Canoe Competition early next month, and schools from across the globe are showing up to compete.

The competition, to be held June 6-8, in Melbourne, Florida, will feature 24 competing schools, which includes a number of wildcard teams. Participants include spring event winners and a group of schools randomly selected. (Wildcard participants had to earn a requisite score on their ASCE Student Chapter annual reports, as well as finish in the upper half of the competitions at their individual student conferences.)

Decades of Concrete Canoes

Concrete canoe competitions, according to ASCE, informally began in the early 1970s, when student chapters of the society constructed and competed their engineered floating devices to see which could design the most viable canoes made with the ubiquitous building material.

In 1988, ASCE introduced the first national championship, giving concrete canoe-builders nationwide something to aspire to. That year, Master Builders Inc. was the competition’s sole corporate sponsor.

For the first time this year, a school from the India Student Conference, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, will compete.

This year, the spring competition was sponsored by the ASCE Foundation, FC&PA, American Concrete Institute, Geico, Pearl Insurance, UPS, NPCA Foundation and Michael Baker International.

Spring Competition

Saint Martin University (Lacey, Washington) launched the 2019 Pacific Northwest ASCE and American Institute of Steel Construction Student Conference in mid-April.

The Pacific Northwest Region Student Conference is just one of the 18 regions that ASCE student chapters are divided into. Every year in April, the schools involved come together to compete in various civil-engineering competitions.

Unlike other conferences, this event is more than just something to show up to; students are able to gain hands-on experience, according to the organization, and the general public is also invited to watch the competitions take place.

The teams that made it to the national competition to be held this summer include: Bannari Amman Institute of Technology; Brigham Young University (wildcard); Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo; University of California, Los Angeles (wildcard); University of Cincinnati (wildcard); Colorado School of Mines; and others.

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, took first place in the Pacific Southwest Student Conference, and the University of Florida, which has been a runner-up for the past two years, won the Southeast Student Conference. For the first time this year, a school from the India Student Conference, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, will compete.

“Attending Nationals in 2018 as a wildcard allowed us to experience what it takes to reach the national level,” said Brigham Young University co-captain Melissa Adams, S.M.ASCE. (BYU is another wildcard this year, its second year in a row.)

“We got a better idea of how much time is required to produce a quality product, obtained an understanding of how important it is to develop new methods for success, and it ultimately gave us an overall drive to perform at a national level and ensure BYU is able to attend in future years.”
