German Researchers Create Biomimicry Pavilions

Researchers at the University of Stuttgart have designed two pavilions for the Bundesgartenschau horticultural show in Germany, with the goal of imitating nature, or biomimicry.

Both of the pavilions—the BUGA Wood Pavilion and the BUGA Fiber Pavilion—have been built by robots.

The Designs

The wood pavilion is made from 376 plate segments that fit together like a puzzle; the structure is based on the shell of sea urchins.

Stuttgart's Institute for Computational Design and Construction and the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design have reportedly studied the design for almost a decade, looking at the interlocking plates that make up an urchin’s shell.

Although the same has made smaller structures with this model, this pavilion spans 30 meters (98 feet) and is column-free weighing just 38 kilograms (84 pounds) per square meter.

The team designed a bespoke robotic fabrication platform with two industrial robots gluing plates together and machining their 17,000 finger joints to 0.3-millimeter accuracy.

Assembly on site took two craftspeople 10 days to complete.

For the fiber pavilion, this structure took its inspiration from beetle wings. The team used glass- and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics, which they say share key characteristics with natural composites such as cellulose, chitin or collagen.

The structure weighs 7.6 kilograms per square meter and its free span is 23 meters.
