SSPC, founded in 1950 as the Steel Structures Painting Council, is focused on the use of protective coatings in the industry. NACE, founded in 1943, is the world’s largest nonprofit of its kind, according to the organization. NACE is based in Houston, with other offices across the U.S., the U.K., China, Malaysia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia, as well as a training center in Dubai.

Having been involved in the coating industry for many decades, and a member of both organizations, I feel there is a cultural difference between them. I think the question has to be asked - exactly who will ultimately benefit from these "synergistic opportunities?" Will it be owners? Members of the organizations? Paint companies and contractors? Will the overall industry be better off? If so, by what measure?

Working together is always a good thing. It is the best way to accomplish more and better serve the industry, members, and both organizations.

Comment from Chad Laubenthal, (4/23/2019, 8:52 AM)

NACE was founded on Cathodic Protection (CP) and is still very weighted for corrosion control of buried pipelines. Corrosion industry members need to broaden their horizons to stay viable. Bringing SSPC into NACE could help bring back some coatings emphasis to NACE, which in my opinion has been declining. It is still surprising to me how many corrosion industry members do not understand the mechanisms of atmospheric corrosion.

Having been involved in both since the late 60s I have seen the ebb and flow of both groups..Currently I believe a merger of the two will create powerful global group dedicated to control the ravages of corrosion on our planet .
