AkzoNobel Releases Info on Coating that 'Paints Itself'

Global coatings company AkzoNobel (Amsterdam) recently announced that it's working on new technology, developing a hi-tech coating that “paints itself.”

In theory, once a small amount of the coating has been manually applied to a surface, it uses a process similar to photosynthesis—harnessing energy from daylight—by converting the light energy into chemical energy.

That energy then gives the paint the ability to spread itself over the surface.

AkzoNobel says that the innovation lies within the nanotechnology that’s imbedded in the pigment. That technology can be “switched off” by a special type of containing type that can be used to mark off the area that needs coated.

“We’ve taken a leaf out of nature’s book by using renewable energy to power our paint,” explains AkzoNobel scientist Opal Lofri, who is leading the project.

“Our innovation embraces all areas of product development, including application, and the fact that we’re mimicking nature makes it extra special. You could say that our paint grows on you.”

Though the technology is still a work in process, the company says its use will aim to be for external buildings and structure that would generally be hard to access, making maintenance on those projects safer and easier.

“There’s still some way to go in terms of perfecting the formula, but initial trials have been promising,” adds Lofri.

“It all grew from the seed of an idea and now it seems anything is possible. Who knows how far we can go?”
