St. Paul Foundry, located in St. Paul, Minnesota, announced Wednesday (April 3) the launch of an online corrosion resistance database for copper-based castings, a tool that will allow casting designers to compare over 3,500 different combinations of corrosive chemicals and alloys.

The foundry, which is certified to AS9100D (2016) and ISO 9001:2015, has manufactured cast components, largely made from brass, bronze and aluminum, for the past 150 years.

Foundry Engineering Manager James Hartigan noted that while a number of casting designers know that both brass and bronze are good for use in highly corrosive applications, they may not know which alloy is the best option to work with.

St. Paul Foundry, located in St. Paul, Minnesota, announced Wednesday (April 3) the launch of an online corrosion resistance database for copper-based castings, a tool that will allow casting designers to compare over 3,500 different combinations of corrosive chemicals and alloys.

“This tool will allow them to quickly evaluate the available choices,” said Hartigan. “Once they’ve selected an alloy, they can use the alloy property comparator on the same web page to see the physical properties of the alloy.”

Hartigan went on to use the example of an engineer designing a casting for the petroleum industry, in which the casting is to be exposed to sulfuric acid at less than 78 percent concentration, while also being subject to an abrasive slurry and needing high fatigue strength.

“The engineer can use the tool to find aluminum bronze is an excellent choice for corrosion and wear resistance,” Hartigan said. “Comparing properties, he or she will see that C95500 Nickel Aluminum Bronze is the best choice. All the engineer has to do now is ask for a raise.”

St. Paul Foundry produces aerospace-quality castings while also managing the value-add supply chain for the aerospace, oil and gas, naval and other OEM markets.

The tool is available for use here.
