London Gets 3D ‘Zebra Crossing’

A 3D "zebra crossing" has made its appearance on a road in North-West London in efforts to improve road safety.

A first for the country, the striped crossing is made to appear to be floating above the road, creating an optical illusion on both sides that is visible to oncoming drivers with the aim of getting motorists to slow down.

3D Crossroads

Although this type of trial is new to Britain, many other countries have starting painting 3D pedestrian crossing markers. As early as 2008, road safety chiefs in China replaced their traditional crosswalks with colorful, bright images of rectangular logs.

In April 2016, Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya used a trompe-l’oiel technique to create the illusion of depth on the streets of Ahmedabad, India. Other crossings have also been tested in Iceland, New Zealand and the U.S.

Another similar project, created by London-based software company Umbrellium, developed an interactive road crossing in 2017 that only appears when necessary.

Year-Long Trial

Located on St. John’s Wood High Street, not far from The Beatles’ iconic Abbey Road, the new crossing will take part in a 12-month trial to study possible decreases in road-related accidents.

"Trials of a similar scheme in New Delhi, India, are reported to show that average speeds where it was employed had dropped by as much as 40 per cent, from 30 mph to 20 mph," reported Westminster Council.

If this trial proves successful, the crossing will be implemented across the Westminster borough.
