Late last week, coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel (Amsterdam) announced the opening of a new research and development center in the United Kingdom that allows the company to test new products in conditions that replicate extreme environments, focusing on service and products for the marine, oil and gas industries.

The 12.6-million-euro (roughly $14.1 million) research and development campus, located in Felling, England, interweaves the site’s 115-year history with product development, and also has facilities geared toward coatings research. According to AkzoNobel, 31.6 million euros have been invested in the Felling site since 2011.

The recently opened center features a new application and testing laboratory that will be focused on evaluating new products in extreme conditions such as temperature resistance, fire and high pressure. Researchers will also be able to expose products to chemicals and corrosion.

Sustainability was kept in mind during the design process for the new complex, according to the company, which includes: solar wall cladding, a sustainable urban drainage system, grey water recycling, photovoltaic panels, air compressor heat recovery and a sedum green roof.

“As the birthplace of the International brand, we’re immensely proud of our Felling site, which has supplied products for some of the world’s most iconic buildings and structures,” said Jean-Michel Gauthier, Managing Director of the company’s Marine and Protective Coatings business.

“The new laboratories will enable our technical experts to partner more closely with our customers and deliver innovative products and solutions that meet the most demanding specifications in our industry.”

According to AkzoNobel, the company employs 3,000 scientists in 70 laboratories around the globe.
