The Falls Bridge of Blue Hill, Maine, is scheduled to be replaced by an enhanced girder bridge, due to the old structure reaching the end of its intended lifespan.

Built in 1926, the Falls Bridge, formally known as the Stevens Bridge, in honor of A.T. Stevens, former Blue Hill selectman, is one of two known remaining rainbow-arch bridges in Maine. The bridge includes a 100-foot span with overhead bracing.

With some occasional refurbishing, the bridge has survived almost 93 years, longer than the first wood or iron bridges built in 1852 and 1883.

The Blue Hill advisory committee has decided to replace the bridge, since restoring the existing structure would take several months and call for the construction of a temporary bridge, ultimately closing Route 157 and only extending the life of the structure by about 15 years.

The Falls Bridge of Blue Hill, Maine, is scheduled to be replaced by an enhanced girder bridge, due to the old structure reaching the end of its intended lifespan.

The project has been debated since 2011, when the Maine Department of Transportation informed town officials that a complete replacement of the bridge might be the best route.

By constructing a new girder bridge using prefabrication methods, Route 157 would only need to close for about 60 days. The current price for the new bridge, which will have a 100-year lifespan, is estimated to cost a tentative $7 million.

The new bridge will be constructed in the same location as the old, carrying Route 157 traffic between Salt Pond and Blue Hill Harbor.

The Maine Department of Transportation’s engineering of the design is slated to begin in 2020, with construction estimated to be completed in 2022.
