The Michigan Department of Transportation, along with the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan, recently named the I-94 Modernization Advanced Bridges Project team as the 2018 winner of the MDOT-ACEC Partnership Charter Award, an annual award honoring Michigan-based project managers and firms alike for project partnerships based on innovation and communication.

I-94 Modernizing Project

According to the ACEC, the award is now in its sixth year; the winning team was chosen by a MDOT/ACEC committee out of six nominations. The I-94 team is composed of personnel from MDOT and private construction firm HNTB, and was responsible for spearheading a project that modernized several miles of freeway in Detroit, upgrading streets, reconstructing two interchanges and replacing 67 bridges.

The I-94 Modernization Project tackled the reconstruction of I-94 freeway in Detroit. Funding for the endeavor was largely provided by the Federal Highway Administration, MDOT and the city of Detroit.

“The I-94 Modernization Project Team did an exceptional job of leveraging the early work on advanced bridges in the I-94 corridor to create opportunities for broad-based industry participation as well as local, small business development,” said Tony Kratofil, PE, MDOT Chief Operations Officer.

“The one-team approach amongst 19 individual engineering firms demonstrated what partnering is all about, and yielded outstanding results for small business growth, expanding the capacity of the Michigan consulting industry to be prepared to help address our growing infrastructure needs.”

The team was recognized for its accomplishments at the annual MDOT-ACEC conference, held in Lansing, Michigan, on Jan. 31. According to the ACEC, MDOT team members included: Terry Stepanski, Carrie Warren, Bonnie Yu and Adam Penzenstadler. HNTB honorees included: Matt Simon, Audrey Andrews and Eric Polvi.

"The MDOT and HNTB team on the I-94 project exemplify what this award stands for,” said Ronald Brenke, Executive Director of ACEC/Michigan.

“The complex and hard work of improving Michigan’s transportation network does not happen effectively without partners who are dedicated to succeeding together, and I thank the team for its commitment to business practices that move the state forward. Congratulations.”
