Specialty chemicals company Nouryon has announced that it has more than doubled its capacity for emulsion-based organic peroxides at its site in Los Reyes, Mexico. The move aims to meet increased customer demand in the North American polyvinyl chloride market.

The project was first announced in January 2018—when the company was still AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals—when the company announced it was investing more than 12 million euros ($14.7 million) to expand the facility.

Specialty chemicals company Nouryon has announced that it has more than doubled its capacity for emulsion-based organic peroxides at its site in Los Reyes, Mexico. The move aims to meet increased customer demand in the North American polyvinyl chloride market.

At the time, the company said a new facility was planned to be built on site to make Perkadox CH-50 organic peroxides, which are also sold primarily in the thermoset resin market.

“We have a growing portfolio of customers, so continued investment to increase production capability at Los Reyes is critical to ensure we continue to meet demand while positioning ourselves for sustainable growth,” said Johan Landfors, Executive Committee Member responsible for Polymer Chemistry.

“Mexico is an important market for us. Expanding our operations in Los Reyes also means we will need to hire more people, which is good news for the local economy.”

The project was originally slated to be complete in May.

“We are pleased that customers are attracted to the benefits of emulsions for PVC production,” said Landfors. “We have expanded production capacity quickly to meet demand and are ready to build more capacity to grow with our customers in the future.”

Emulsion-based peroxides also play a key role in Nouryon’s patented continuous initiator dosing technology, which allows PVC producers to increase reactor output by up to 40 percent with minimum capital expenditure, the company notes.
