Another stadium could be coming to the Inglewood, California, area as the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers are looking at three contractors to build a new privately funded arena and mixed-use project.

The Project

Reportedly, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is looking at contractors for a new 18,000-seat-venue that would be ready in time for the 2024-25 season. Currently, the team plays at the Staples Center and has a contract through the 2023-24 season. Plans also include a practice facility, a sports medicine clinic and retail space. No numbers have been released to the public.

According to VenuesNow, the potential contractors include a joint venture of AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction, a JV of Mortenson and Clark Construction, and PCL Construction.

The Response

There is ongoing pushback on the project, though, as Madison Square Garden Entertainment, which owns the nearby venue the Forum, has filed a lawsuit to stop it, claiming that if the Clippers built an arena it would violate a development agreement it has with the city.

The Clippers, meanwhile, have filed a countersuit asking the court to validate its negotiating agreement with Inglewood, which refers to a $1.5 million three-year understanding with the city for the exploration of 46 acres of land.

About 27 of those acres would get developed for the arena and the rest would go back to the city. As part of the agreement, the Clippers are working on an 18-month Environmental Impact Report on the property.
