Authorities for Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium (home of the University of Hawaii football team) are seeking $30 million from the state to make repairs to the facility, according to recent reports.

The Report

According to the findings, immediate repairs are needed for eight areas of the stadium, including:

  • Corroded diagonal braces that support the structure all the way to the roof;
  • Cracked bracing clips that stabilize the seating sections; and
  • Rusted edges of the floors beneath the seats.

In all, about 200 steel members and 85 panels of lightweight deck were found with “severe corrosion.”

Despite this, the authority says that the arena in general is still structurally sound.

"First and foremost, we want to make clear that the stadium is safe; however, the report finds that the facility is deteriorating at an accelerated pace. This is not unexpected given the age of the facility," said Stadium Authority Chair Ross Yamasaki.

"We would like to plan far enough where we can be in a preventative maintenance mode so we are spending the least amount of money to prevent things from happening versus addressing them before they become an issue.”

What Now

Money has been an issue for the stadium’s upkeep as, according to news reports, no funds were made available for capital improvement projects in the past two years.

The Authority is asking for $20 million for the 2020 fiscal year and $10 million for the 2021 fiscal year. In addition, the Authority is requesting annual inspections of the facility going forward.
