The American Institute of Architects released last week nine projects that it’s recognizing for its 2019 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture.

“The award program celebrates the best contemporary architecture and highlights the many ways buildings and spaces can improve lives,” according to the organizations.

“AIA’s nine-member jury selects submissions that demonstrate design achievement, including a sense of place and purpose, ecology, environmental sustainability and history.”

2019 recipients include:

Arlington Elementary School - Tacoma, Washington, Mahlum Architects

“A central tenet of the school’s design was to support the relationship between indoor and outdoor learning,” according to the AIA. “The school’s saw-toothed roof floods natural light into interior spaces, and views of green spaces and the sky throughout demonstrate its embrace of nature.”

Modular construction met the project’s budget demands, constructing the new school on the playfields of the school it replaced. The project was delivered for $283 per square foot.

The American Institute of Architects released last week nine projects that it’s recognizing for its 2019 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture. Described as a new prototype for hospitals, the Casey House added 59,000 square feet of space to an existing heritage-designated Victorian mansion.

Described as a new prototype for hospitals, the project added 59,000 square feet of space to an existing heritage-designated Victorian mansion. The new structure embraces the 1875 mansion, nicknamed “the Grey Lady,” and organizes the user experience around a landscaped courtyard, visible from every corridor and room.

Confluence Park - San Antonio, Lake | Flato Architects + Matsys

The San Antonio River Foundation tasked the design team with transforming a former construction storage yard into an outdoor education center. The design features the central pavilion’s 22 concrete petal structures, which stand 26 feet high and form a network of vaults that provide shade and flow rainwater directly to an underground cistern.

Crosstown Concourse - Memphis, Tennessee, Looney Ricks Kiss

A $200 million revitalization of a 1.3-million-square-foot retail distribution center is now filled with a 400-student charter high school, 20,000-square-foot YMCA fitness center, 450-seat black box theater, free art gallery, radio station and the nation’s largest private dental clinic, in addition to nearly 300 apartments.

Restoration of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia - Charlottesville, Virginia, John G. Waite Associates, Architects PLLC

“The project tapped into some of the most advanced conservation measures available,” according to the AIA. “A leaking roof was replaced with a copper one while specialist contractors cleaned, stabilized and repointed the brick walls. The building’s exterior metal moldings, dating from the 1890s, were restored, and the deteriorated replacement column capitals on the north and south porticos were replaced with Carrara marble capitals that accurately replicate Jefferson’s originals.”

Smart Factory - Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Barkow Leibinger

This facility includes a showroom that displays machines used to fold and shape sheet metal. Eleven laser-cut Vierendeel trusses spanning 140 feet contain the machines, some of which were used to cut and fold them. A central catwalk and meeting spaces are woven into the webbing of trusses, providing clients an overlook of the machines and processes below.

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture – Washington, D.C., The Freelon Group (Now part of Perkins+Will), Adjaye Associates, Davis Brody Bond, and SmithGroup

The exterior is comprised of patterns cast by the 3,600 bronze-colored panels that wrap the museum. Inside, an open and unrestricted central hall reveals the 400,000-square-foot museum’s internal arrangement with 130-foot views to the upper levels and down to the underground concourse.

Starter Home No. 4-15 - Saint Thomas/Ninth, New Orleans, OJT

This initiative delivers entry-level homes to historic neighborhoods that are gentrifying, according to the AIA. Here, the architects swapped long, flat dwellings for tall, skinny ones. Seeking maximum density, every square foot of the site is active and accounted for.

TIRPITZ Museum - Blåvand, Denmark, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group

A transformation of a cement World War II bunker into a cultural complex, architects filled the structure with light by including 20-foot glass facades.

“The 2019 Architecture program celebrates the best contemporary architecture regardless of budget, size, style or type,” the AIA says.

“These stunning projects show the world the range of outstanding work architects create and highlight the many ways buildings and spaces can improve our lives.”
