Ontario-based nanomaterial technologies firm Zenyatta Ventures is investigating the possibility of using graphene tailings in place of cement.

Study leader Ahmad Rteil, a professor at the University of British Columbia, where material testing is being conducted, noted that upon initial review of the chemistry, the tailings would meet the Canada Standards Association and American Society for Testing and Materials standards of cement replacement in concrete.

Graphene is an atom-thin, super-strong carbon material. According to Zenyatta, graphene is 300 times harder than steel and diamond.

Ontario-based nanomaterial technologies firm Zenyatta Ventures is investigating the possibility of using graphene tailings in the place of cement.

Rteil added that if these findings are confirmed, it may lead to a reduction in cost for tailings disposal as well as create a potential revenue stream using byproducts.

The idea to use the Albany graphite tailings material as a replacement for cement stemmed from company discussions with Rteil regarding market development, specifically regarding the application of graphene in concrete. Recently, the company delivered two drums of tailings to Rteil’s lab for further study.

“Testwork is now underway which includes 90-day strength measurements on concrete made with tailings used as cement replacement and results are expected within four months,” Zenyatta writes in a press release.

I just hope that graphene doesn't turn out to be the next asbestos...a "miracle" product put into everything only to be found to have serious health concerns later.
