At the end of December, the Pittsburgh City Council voted 8-0 to create a task force geared toward addressing fraud in the construction industry.

The Joint Task Force on Construction Industry Fraud will serve to identify and target unfair trade practices, including tax fraud among construction businesses in Pittsburgh. Officials note, however, that the task force’s general purview will not include practices related to hiring undocumented workers.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the resolution will have the mayor convene members from the council, as well as the offices of the city controller and other entities, including the Allegheny County district attorney, to tackle tax fraud. In this instance, tax fraud refers to paying people under the table.

At the end of December, the Pittsburgh City Council voted 8-0 to create a task force geared toward addressing fraud in the construction industry.

Previous approaches to construction industry fraud did refer to undocumented workers, however, in the most recent measure, resolution backers said that the bill did not pertain to immigration.

Moving forward, the task force will review industry practices in the city, then make recommendations regarding policy to the council and mayor.

According to the Gazette, the scope of the loss of tax revenue of the city remains unclear.

“We’re just looking at tax fraud. We’re not looking at anything on immigration,” council member Corey O’Connor told the newspaper. “We’re a welcoming city and that’s how we’ll always be. We’re only in charge of taxing.”
