The ever-changing visual landscape of Pensacola, Florida’s Graffiti Bridge continues to evolve with a recent holiday homage, an impromptu work in 30 minutes by 26-year-old artist Monty Welt.

The Grinch-President Donald J. Trump mashup is the artist’s 20th or 21st work on the bridge, according to the Pensacola News Journal; the artist cannot specifically remember how many murals he has done at this point.

Graffiti Bridge History

The 17th street CSX Railroad Trestle was built in 1888, according to Atlas Obscura. Locals have been painting the structure for several generations, and the artwork is known for changing daily, often dealing with topical humor.

With such a changing canvas, artists are aware that their work can be covered in a matter of hours. In October 2018, Welt’s work provided needed levity before Hurricane Michael made landfall, highlighted by his portrayal of Family Guy weatherman Ollie Williams, warning, “It’s gon' rain.”

And last January, James Romero, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, took it upon himself to see how many layers of paint actually covered the Graffiti Bridge. The Graffiti Bridge is exempt from the statute that protects public property from defacement, noted the Pensacola News Journal.

Holiday Update

The artist told the Pensacola News Journal that while he doesn’t always create art with a message, his latest portrayal, depicting the Grinch with hair similar to the president’s, with the line “Make Christmas Great Again,” has been raising commentary on social media, with some noting that the art seems to be poking fun at the president.

"With the Grinch, I think that was the most controversial one I've done," Welt said. "But it was fun, 'cause it got people talking and stuff as well."

Alongside his hopes of becoming a full-time artist, Welt also aims to inspire others to test out their art-making abilities at the bridge.
