It looks like one of Zaha Hadid’s last designs is almost complete with a new video showing the progress of Qatar’s Al Wakrah Stadium.

The 40,000-seat venue will hold the 2022 World Cup games and is slated to be completed by the end of 2019’s first quarter.

The Project

The structure was commissioned by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (the group responsible for the stadiums and infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup), and reportedly just needs some finishing touches on interior finishes, the roof and the facade.

The stadium will have a retractable roof that will be able to close in approximately 30 minutes supported by a series of 540-ton pillars, as well as a light sleeve, made of steel wires brought together at an oculus, that will provide shade to the pitch.

The stadium is slated to be used after the games as well as it also will hold schools, a wedding hall, tennis courts, basketball courts, restaurants, a swimming pool, gyms and marketplaces that will be open to the community.

In addition, the region’s local soccer team will use the club as its home stadium, though reducing capacity to 20,000 seats. The other 20,000 are to be donated to stadium development projects elsewhere.

In addition to Zaha Hadid Architects, design firm AECOM, as well as engineering firm Besix and general contracting joint venture MIDMAC, PORR Qatar and Six Construct Qatar, are responsible for the project.

The stadium will host the 2022 World Cup games from Nov. 21, 2022, through Dec. 18, 2022.
