PennDOT Replaces Over 500 'Poor' Condition Bridges

Late last month, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that 511 “poor” condition bridges had been replaced to date, with another 41 currently under construction thanks to a public-private partnership.

According to PennDOT, the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project, among other investments, has contributed to 819 state-maintained bridges now being in good condition, the number in poor condition decreasing by 1,044 and the number in fair condition increasing by 95. Overall, the number of state-owned bridges in poor condition has dropped to fewer than 3,000; in 2008, the high was more than 6,000.

PennDOT kicked off the Rapid Bridge Replacement project in 2013, when the state was faced with both limited resources and a number of bridges in poor condition. The RBR Project is among the first in the nation “to bundle the replacement of hundreds of bridges in a public-private partnership agreement,” according to the transportation agency.

"This unique project has been a large undertaking for PennDOT and the private sector and has been a great complement to the investments we're making across the state," said PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards.

"The majority of these bridges are in rural communities that would have faced long detours or traffic impacts if we had to restrict or close them, so we are very pleased to deliver this value in those communities."

Construction on all bridges is slated for completion in 2019.
