Architecture and design firm ecoLogicStudio (London) recently unveiled an “urban curtain” that was developed to store CO2.

The prototype curtain, named Photo.Synth.Etica, designed to hang off the side of the facade of buildings, was developed in collaboration with European Union innovation company Climate-KIC, and is currently on display at the Printworks Building in Dublin.

The Project

The curtain shading system is comprised of 16 modules that are 2 by 7 meters. Each module utilizes daylight and fresh air to feed the micro-algal cultures inside.

The process starts at the bottom of the facade, where air is introduced, causing bubbles to rise through the liquid in the bioplastic modules. CO2 and other pollutants are captured in the algae and filtered air is released from the top of the facade unit.

The algae, meanwhile, can later be harvested and used in the production of more bioplastic.
