In mid-October, the American Concrete Institute announced the winners of the 2018 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, with the highest honor going to the Viaduct Over River Almonte in Garrovillas de Alconétar, Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain.

According to ACI, this award is given annually to a project that demonstrates excellence in concrete innovation and technology. The Viaduct Over River Almonte stood out due to being the largest railway bridge in Spain, yet remaining delicate in appearance.

Viaduct Over River Almonte

The new high-speed rail line, currently under construction and slated to connect Madrid and the Extremadura, a western Spanish region that borders Portugal, will cross the River Almonte on a 3,270-foot-long long viaduct, a concrete arch bridge with a 1,264-foot-long main span.

The structure’s aerodynamic appearance can largely be attributed to a four-legged arch configuration; 11,603 psi high-performance concrete; an efficient building method, featuring temporary towers and stays; and an innovative monitoring system. The viaduct also lays claim to being the world’s largest concrete arch bridge for high-speed rail service. Designed to respond in an improved manner to the effects of crosswind, the viaduct itself was completed in 2016, with construction originally beginning in 2011. A bespoke barrier forces birds to fly upward and above the overhead mast line.

Construction work was managed by Adif, the Administration of Railway Infrastructure, a state-owned company that operates under the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, according to Princeton.

Other Awards

In order to be eligible for winning an Excellence in Concrete Construction Award, projects need to be winners at a local ACI chapter level, and then submitted by that chapter, or chosen by one of the Institute’s international partners.

The vetting process involved an expert panel of judges assessing each project based on architectural and engineering merit, creativity, innovative construction techniques and use of materials, ingenuity, sustainability and resilience, and functionality.
