A project at Germany’s University of Stuttgart is looking at how self-supporting structures in nature—such as sand dunes—can translate into the architectural world.

The school’s Institute for Computational Design and Construction presented its Aggregate Pavilion 2018, a structure made from more than 120,000 recycled plastic spiked stars that create a structure held together only by friction.

The structure is the result of 10 years of research into designed granular materials for architecture, according to the school, and is the first fully enclosed architectural space entirely constructed from designed granules.

“Such unbound granular materials show the unique property to obtain both the stable character of a solid material and the rapid reconfigurability of a fluid,” according to the school’s press release. “If custom-designed particles are deployed, granular materials can form self-supporting spatial enclosures while remaining fully reconfigurable and reusable.”

The thousands of hexapods and dekapods were injection molded with recycled plastic and were combined with 725 plastic, inflatable spheres.

The granules were deployed using a cable-driven parallel robot that was fixed on four points to the walls surrounding the structure. After the structure was fully enclosed, the spheres were deflated and removed.
