Staten Island’s Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will be catching some “Zs." The name on the bridge, spelled wrong for more than 50 years with one "z" instead of two, is now being corrected thanks to a bill signed Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, a suspension span opened in 1964, connects Staten Island and Brooklyn.

Catching Some “Zs”

According to ABC 7, the bridge is named after Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who discovered the New York Harbor in 1524. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be making the fix as bridge signage is gradually replaced over time. MTA spokesperson John Weinstein told am New York that 96 signs will be changed “under a normal schedule of maintenance” over the next several years.

Staten Island’s Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will be catching some “Zs." The name on the bridge, spelled wrong for more than 50 years with one "z" instead of two, is now being corrected thanks to a bill signed Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Assemblymember Michael Cusick, the bill’s Assembly sponsor, said that the changes were critical and funding for the work will not be taken from taxpayers.

As for other homages to the explorer, a statue of Verrazzano located in lower Manhattan has both “zs,” as does a bridge that runs over Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay.

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was the world's longest suspension span at the time of its opening. In terms of design, there is a 1-and-5/8-inch difference between the tops and bases of the structure’s 693-foot-tall towers, to account for the curvature of the earth. Held together with 3 million rivets and 1 million bolts, each tower weighs 27,000 tons. Due to seasonal heating and cooling of the steel cables, the double-decked roadway is 12 feet lower in the summer than in the winter.
