Charles H. Wyatt IV, who served on the Board of Governors of SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings for a decade, passed away Sept. 20 in Pensacola, Florida, at age 81.

An SSPC member for nearly 20 years, Wyatt, known to friends and colleagues as Charlie, served on the Board of Governors from 1992 to 2002 and was SSPC President from 1999 to 2000. He received the SSPC Past President Award in 2000 and SSPC’s most prestigious award, Honorary Life Member, in 2003. He was also the Tutorial Chair for the SSPC conference from 1990 through 1992 and participated in various technical committees.

Charles Wyatt, who served as president of SSPC from 1999 to 2000, passed away Sept. 20 in Pensacola, Florida.

In addition to his membership in SSPC, Wyatt was a member of many other organizations, including the Houston Coating Society, NACE International, National Pipe Coating Association, National Adhesives Council and National Asbestos Council.

A Life in Corrosion Control

Born in Cincinnati, Wyatt obtained a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, and spent 40 years in the corrosion-control industry. He was co-holder of two U.S. patents and was owner of Wyatt Development Group.

Wyatt was a frequent speaker at the SSPC Annual Conference, Protective Coatings Europe, Coatings for Asia, NACE, NSRP and the International Congress on the Environment. He also authored articles for industry magazines such as JPCL, Offshore Engineer, Materials Performance, Modern Paint & Coatings, Roads and Bridges and Disaster Recovery. He was named among the industry’s top leaders and thinkers in 2009 by JPCL.

Wyatt was an exceptional volunteer for SSPC, supporting local chapters, reviewing papers for the conference and always promoting the organization when he could. He attended the SSPC conference almost every year and knew nearly everyone who attended. Along with Jeff Theo and Richard Lavergne, Wyatt helped bring to life SSPC’s national painter competitions, held in the 1990s. Even after officially retiring, he kept in touch with the SSPC staff and others in the industry and continued his efforts on behalf of SSPC.

Community Service

In addition to his service within the corrosion-control industry, Wyatt was a leader in his community, serving as director of the Chitamacha Golf Tournament in his retirement in LaFayette, Louisiana (before moving more recently to Pensacola), and founding the Bayou Vermillion Preservation Association.

Wyatt is survived by his wife, Jan, and their three children, Dr. Charles H. Wyatt V, Julia McCormick Wyatt James, and Lisa Blair Wyatt Miller, along with their families.

Wyatt will be remembered with a service to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Christ Episcopal Church, 18 W. Wright St., Pensacola. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be directed to the Naval Aviation Museum, where Wyatt served as a volunteer in recent years, or Moncus Park, LaFayette, Louisiana.

Charlie was a great part of our corrosion control / coatings family and such a joy to be with! It was an honor to call him my friend. He will truly be missed! Many thanks to his contribution to the industry and for his friendship!

I share the same sentiments as Norm. Charlie and I found out we were both Chem Engrs from Northwestern a funny way. Some 15-20 years ago, I went back to the old fraternity house one random homecoming and he walks up to me and says this beer's for you old friend. We both asked each other something to the effect of "what are you doing here"....just the week prior we were discussing refrigeration dehumidification at length. Like the article said, he was frequented several SSPC functions well after retirement. He always went out of his way to converse with me; it was a pleasure to have known him.

Charlie and I saw each other infrequently, but always connected. We learned from each other mostly at Houston Coatings Society events in the Houston area. I will miss him.
