The American Concrete Institute recently announced the formation of a new committee to develop and report information on 3D printing and additive manufacturing with inorganic cementitious materials.

The Committee

The ACI Committee 564, 3D Printing with Cementitious Materials aims to develop publications related to additive manufacturing with cement-based materials that would focus on impact, challenges and construction applications.

United States Marine Corps

In August, the Additive Manufacturing Team at Marine Corps Systems Command, working in collaboration with Marines from the I Marine Expeditionary Force, used a 3D printer to create the a 500-square-foot barracks hut in 40 hours. ACI's new committee hopes to develop and report information on 3D printing and additive manufacturing.

“3D printing is a new and exciting frontier in the concrete industry,” said Chairman Scott Jones. “ACI Committee 564 hopes to bring together all stakeholders to discuss the many challenges and opportunities with this new technology.”

ACI lists the following goals for the committee:

  • Develop publications relating to additive manufacturing with cement-based materials. One focusing on “big picture” impact and challenges and the other focusing on construction applications;
  • Collaborate with ACI committees to disseminate AM information and determine ways AM can be integrated into the concrete community;
  • Collaborate with technical organizations outside of ACI (e.g., RILEM, ASTM, PCI, ISO, ASCE) to facilitate and coordinate information sharing;
  • Foster discussion on research needs and challenges preventing AM from wide adoption in the concrete construction community; and
  • Develop guidelines to evaluate materials and technology for AM.

The Committee will meet 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, at the Concrete Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas. Prior to the meeting, a series of demonstrations entitled “Materials Science Aspects Related to Digital Manufacturing (3D Printing) of Cementitious Materials” will begin at 8:30 a.m. ACI University will also host a 3D printing webinar on Nov. 13.
