In a bid to lessen congestion on the M6 highway running through England, an old bridge, no longer used, was taken down late last week. Officials originally anticipated a 24-hour closure, but the work was reportedly completed ahead of schedule.

Work on removing the 800-ton, 250 foot-long Creswell Home Farm bridge, located north of Stafford, began on Saturday evening (Sept. 22), with alternate routes set in place for drivers. The highway reopened at 7:30 the following morning, ahead of schedule.

Bridge Removal

Highways England noted that two bridge piers that remain on either side of the road are safe to travel under. Both piers will be removed in the next few weeks.

According to the BBC, Creswell Home Farm bridge is both no longer in use and is too narrow for the upgrades that are planned for the M6. The adjustments made will include an extra lane in each direction; the project is slated to cost up to £335.4 million (roughly $441 million).

The M6, which runs from Coventry to the Scottish border, was built in sections between 1958 and 2008 and is plagued with traffic problems; last year, a list of the stretches of roadway with the worst traffic tie-ups in the U.K. placed three sections of the M6 in its top five.

Before the bridge removal, Highways England expressed the hope that the work would be completed in 12 hours, rather than 24. "We cannot demolish the bridge safely with traffic using the M6; therefore we must close the motorway,” said the agency.

According to Highways Magazine, the old bridge will be recycled and used in new construction on the highway. The bridge was originally built in 1961, the first of two bridges planned for removal—the other is the Burton Bank footbridge, slated to be taken down next year.
