The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the City of Alexandria, Virginia, have officially awarded a $213.7 million construction contract for the Potomac Yard station, a project that is behind its original schedule and over its original budget.

Officials announced that Potomac Yard Constructors, a joint venture of global construction companies Halmar International and Schiavone Construction Co., won the contract last week via a press release.

“We look forward to the construction of the Potomac Yard Metro Station, an exciting project that will provide jobs and expand transit options for the fastest-growing part of the Alexandria community,” said Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld.

“Once complete, the station and surrounding development will create a thriving community, connected by transit, where people can enjoy seamless access to jobs, education, stores, restaurants and entertainment options—both on site and throughout the region.”

The Project

At one point in the project’s plan history, the station was slated to open in 2016 and had an original budget of $268 million. It has been delayed multiple times and the budget has ballooned to $320 million after higher-than-anticipated bids in 2017.

Now, construction is slated to begin in spring 2019 and finish in early 2022. However, the path to completion is far from clear.

Because of the rise in costs, design changes were unveiled earlier this year, most notably announcing the elimination of a planned south entrance to the station much to disapproval of potential businesses and hundreds of residents.

The city is expected to hold public hearings on the design changes this fall and still needs to officially approve the plans.

Officials expect the station to eventually support 26,000 new jobs and 13,000 new residents.
