R&D Magazine recently announced a number of coating- and adhesive-related developments from a variety of labs as finalists in this year’s R&D 100, an annual awards program presented by the magazine at its conference, which will be held in mid-November.

This year’s finalists include several entries from PPG, Dow Chemical Company and coatings with low VOCs, among others.

PPG Industries takes a number of the finalist entries, including less-dense paint, a low-temperature paint system for Ferrari and a multi-surface waterproofer.

PPG’s AERO Light and Easy product line is composed of three offerings: Pancrytex D2 AERO, which protects buildings against the elements; Garnytex Mat AERO, meant for thick mineral coatings; and Practi Mat AERO, for internal walls and ceilings. These products incorporate lighter components, which reduces paint density and weight.

Olympic Smartguard is a concentrated clear sealer designed for fast dry time and easy application, according to the company, and can be used to coat wood, concrete, masonry and weathered composite.

PPG Industries takes a number of the finalist entries, including less-dense paint, a low-temperature paint system for Ferrari and a multi-surface waterproofer.

Working in collaboration with Ferrari, PPG created a new low-temperature paint system for automotives, a two-component system that incorporates “a specially formulated clear coat which makes it possible for the car to be baked at 100 degrees instead of 150 degrees.”

Dow Chemical Company

Dow Chemical Company’s ENGAGE PV Polyolefin resins allow both photovoltaic encapsulant film and module manufacturers to develop films that reduce module and system costs.

EVOLV3D Universal Support Material serves as a sole support material for 3D printer filaments. Dow’s product is also soluble in water, which makes for a safer cleanup that does not require caustic baths. The material can also be washed down the drain.

Other Finalists

Light Curable Coatings, developed through funding from the Ohio Soybean Council, is a UV-cured, high-performance, bio-preferred floor coating with no volatile organic compounds.

“The legacy of the R&D 100 Awards program continues to impress me,” said R&D Magazine editor Laura Panjwani. “The caliber of the products recognized throughout the program’s decades-long history is truly exceptional. I can’t wait to see what future innovations will be recognized by the R&D 100 Awards next.”

The R&D 100 Conference, launched in 2015, will be held Nov. 15-16 at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, in Orlando, Florida. The R&D 100 Award Winners and Finalists will be honored at a gala event on Nov. 16.
