Bjarke Ingels Group, working in collaboration with Heatherwick Studio, is designing Google’s new 1.04-million-square-foot campus, located in Sunnyvale, California, composed of two buildings that rise like hills from the landscape.

In December 2017, Google filed a proposal with the city of Sunnyvale for the project; one building will be 505,078 square feet, the other 537,000 square feet. To date, Google has acquired 50 properties in the area, valued at more than $1 billion total.

BIG Plans

The complex, dubbed “Caribbean” for its proximity to a nearby street of the same name, would be large enough to house 4,500 employees, featuring roofs with long inclines that lead to different levels of each building. Employees will be able to walk, bike or skate to where they need to go, on whatever level. This approach also reportedly accommodates for integration of the features of Moffett Park, as the tech giant plans to make the site mixed-use, which includes housing.

According to Dezeen, Clive Wilkinson Architects was chosen to design the interior, with Olin responsible for landscape planning. The site will also feature separate central utility plants, as well as 2,085 parking spaces. Google has noted that it remains focused on reducing cars on the road by prioritizing transportation alternatives like shuttles and public transit. Glazed walls are to fill the gaps between the slopes of the inclines, as well as cover the remaining facades.

“The proposed project aligns with the city of Sunnyvale’s goals to maximize Moffett Park development with headquarters, office and research-development facilities,” said Joe Van Belleghem, Google’s senior director of construction and design for the Bay Area.

In conjunction with the project, Google will also donate $1 million toward programs for the homeless in the area, as well as contribute another $750,000 toward local education.

The campus is slated to open in 2021 at the earliest. BIG and Heatherwick are also collaborating on Google’s Mountain View campus.
