The deadline is quickly approaching for submissions to the Structure Awards, the program honoring excellent work on protective coatings projects presented annually by SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings.

SSPC will continue accepting nominations for the awards through next Thursday, Aug. 30. SSPC members may submit nominations for projects completed between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018; the awards will be presented at SSPC's Coatings+ Conference in February.

New York State Pavilion's Tent of Tomorrow, built for the 1964 World's Fair, underwent a $3 million coating job in 2016 and won a 2017 SSPC Coatings Industry Spirit Award.

The Structure Awards recognize the work of teams of contractors, designers, end-users and coating manufacturers for excellence on protective coatings projects. In addition to being honored at SSPC’s annual conference, the projects will be featured in JPCL.

A representative of the structure owner must attend the awards luncheon at Coatings+, which takes place Feb. 11-14, 2019, at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, and must grant permission for information to be published with the JPCL photo essay in order to be eligible.

The Awards

The awards to be handed out are:

Crone Knoy Award, for outstanding achievement in commercial or industrial coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. The qualities that may represent outstanding achievement in this area include excellence in craftsmanship or execution of work, and use of state-of-the-art techniques or products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.

Charles G. Munger Award, for the outstanding industrial or commercial coatings project demonstrating longevity of the original coating. The structure may have had spot repairs or overcoating with the original coating still intact. (This project does not need to have been completed in 2017-18.)

William Johnson Award, for outstanding achievement demonstrating aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work. The qualities that are considered for aesthetic merit include color, gloss or texture, or that the coating on the structure compliments the environment while enhancing the structure itself. The coating may represent a theme, an object or a specific graphic design.

George Campbell Award, for outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial or commercial coatings project. The qualities that may represent achievement in a difficult or complex structure may include work occurring in harsh or extreme environmental conditions; work completed under strict time constraints; work done with limited access or in high traffic areas; work on a structure with complex structural components; or a project that requires coordination with multiple trades or sub-contractors.

Erik S. Kline Award, for outstanding achievement in industrial coatings work performed in a fixed shop facility. The project can be repair work or new construction.

Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence, in recognition of exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.

SSPC Coatings Industry Spirit Award, for recognition of a coatings project that demonstrates extraordinary service benefiting a community or the industry.

The Military Coatings and Industry Spirit awards are also not subject to the July 2017-June 2018 time restriction.
