Evonik Pairs with Wynca for Fumed Silica

In response to an increased global market demand for fumed silica, Evonik Industries (Essen, Germany) is forming a joint venture with Chinese company Wynca to produce its Aerosil product. For Evonik, this means an expansion on Aerosil production facilities; for Wynca, this is an opportunity to expand its silicone-based product offerings.

Fumed silica is most often used in transparent silicones; coatings and paints; modern adhesives; and non-combustible high-performance insulation materials.

Joint Partnership

The new Evonik Wynca Silicon Material Co. Ltd. production facility will be located in Zhenjiang New Material Industry Park, in China’s Jiangsu Province. The plant, slated to have an 8,000-metric-ton annual product output, will open in 2021, though the project still requires approval from the necessary authorities.

In response to an increased global market demand for fumed silica, Evonik Industries is forming a joint venture with Chinese company Wynca to produce Aerosil. For Evonik, this means an expansion on Aerosil production facilities; for Wynca, this is an opportunity to expand its silicone-based product offerings.

Current drivers for the fumed silica market in China include adhesives used in the silicone industry, as well as sealants used in buildings and cars. Both precipitated and fumed silica were identified by Evonik as having above-market growth and increased margin potential.

“With the joint venture, we are consistently continuing to strengthen our Resource Efficiency segment," said Harald Schwager, deputy chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries. "Following the acquisition of the Huber silica business and the associated expansion of our precipitated silica capacities as well as the growth of our fumed silica capacities in Antwerp, we are now taking the next step with the first fumed silica plant in the attractive Chinese market. Wynca is a strong partner to do this and we look forward to the future cooperation.”

Wynca customarily works with smelting cores, ganister sand processing and monomer synthesis, generating silicone rubber, silicone oil, silicone resin and silane coupling agents.

“The production site for silica in China will enable us to supply our high-quality products to the growing Asian market with significantly shorter transport routes,” said Johannes Ohmer, member of the Board of Management of Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH.
