Malibu Seeking Storm-Drain Artist

The City of Malibu, California, is seeking an artist to bring their craft to the city’s environmental public art campaign. The “Keep It Clean, Malibu” campaign was started in 2014 by artist Lindsay Carron; this year, the project is soliciting for the coating of four storm drain inlets.

The four inlets are located on Cross Creek Road, in front of Point Dume Plaza on Heathercliff Road, at the corner of Morning View Drive and the Pacific Coast Highway (pictured), and at Trancas Park.

The budget for this project is $8,000.

Bids are due for this project by Sept.. 13.

Scope of Work 

The awarded artist will be responsible for the coating of four storm drain inlets throughout the city. The four inlets are located on Cross Creek Road, in front of Point Dume Plaza on Heathercliff Road, at the corner of Morning View Drive and the Pacific Coast Highway, and at Trancas Park.

These outdoor murals are required to be painted with a high-quality, colorfast coating with proven ability to maintain colorfastness for at least four years. Each design will then be covered with a clear coat of environmentally sensitive sealant by a city staff member.

Artwork is to be contained on the concrete sidewalk, inlet lid and gutter. Red curbs may only be coated over when directly on the storm drain lid. The red curb extending beyond the length of the storm drain inlet must be left red.

The campaign’s slogan, “Keep it Clean, Malibu” must be included somewhere in each mural.

Due to the sensitivity of the location of the art, the artist must also have proper materials and absorbent items on hand to immediately clean up any spills that may occur during the coating process.
