The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority awarded a $144 million piece of its $1.2 billion expansion plan to Cincinnati, Ohio-based Messer Construction late last month, marking the sixth piece of the puzzle to be slated in the massive renovation.

The Project

According to a press release issued by the MNAA, the $144 million design-build contract is for a six-level parking garage with approximately 3,000 spaces, a large pedestrian plaza and 64,000-square-foot airport administrative office building on the fifth level.

Messer is partnering with Moody Nolan, Charter Construction and Pinnacle Construction Partners for the project. The contract also reportedly includes the design for an additional six-story parking garage with a hotel on the fifth story. The construction part of that job will be out for bid at a future date.

"The awarding of this contract is the next step forward for BNA Vision," said Doug Kreulen, MNAA president and CEO.

"This project will address our need for additional short-term parking, as well as providing a new office building for MNAA staff and others. Once the new office building is complete, we will demolish MNAA's current office space, which is located above the security checkpoint, in preparation for the upcoming renovation and expansion of our terminal lobby. It's a measured, phased-in process designed to mitigate inconvenience and airport disruption."

The parking garage portion is slated to begin in early 2019 and wrap up in early 2020. The office part of the project is slated for completion in late 2020.

The Bigger Picture

The revamp of the airport, dubbed the BNA Vision Plan, was first launched in 2016 and revolves around a five-year overhaul including a terminal and plaza, along with a central entrance with a space in the shape of an acoustic guitar.

Officials cited the airport’s growth as a reason for the overhaul, jumping 11.2 percent to 13.5 million in 2016.

“Our city is booming and the new BNA design will reflect the best of Music City, taking our travel opportunities to new heights,” said country music star Dierks Bentley, Nashville Airport Authority board member, in a video unveiling the airport’s designs.

Those overall designs were by Dallas-based architecture firm Corgan and revealed in September 2017.

Other contracts that have been awarded include:

  • New Parking and Transportation Center – Six levels, 2,200 parking spaces, capacity for 20,000 gallons of rain water harvesting for landscape irritation and green-screen vegetation wall.
