If you’re both a bridge enthusiast and a thrill-seeker, Canada’s largest ski resort, Whistler Blackcomb, has the answer: a 427-foot-long suspension bridge that hangs above the ski slopes of Whistler Mountain, spanning between Whistler's peak and the West Ridge.

The Cloudraker Skybridge, located in British Columbia, hangs 6,562 feet above the slopes below, providing visitors with views of the valley, lakes and Whistler Village, with visibility stretching all the way to Pemberton.

Suspended in the Air

The Cloudraker Skybridge is made of 101 steel modules, each one weighing roughly 500 pounds, with flooring made of a steel grid that visitors can see through to the ground below. Lifestyle blogger Sara Chu, upon visiting the suspension bridge, told The Star Vancouver that visitors could be more easily intimidated by Cloudraker in comparison with the Sky Pilot suspension bridge in Squamish: Sky Pilot has wooden platforms instead of steel grating for its decking.

The all-season bridge, supported by four cables that can hold a combined weight of 36 tons, closed temporarily in mid-July so that the West Ridge View Point could be installed. The bridge also has a cantilever viewing deck, positioned to face Rainbow Mountain while also providing a view of Black Tusk, a now-extinct volcano.

Whistler Blackcomb was acquired in 2016 by resort company Vail Resorts, which runs 10 ski parks, many of which are located in North America. The Cloudraker Skybridge, as well as the new viewing platforms and the construction of five other projects, are part of a $66 million investment from the company.
