A new environmental sensing platform developed at the Air Force Research Laboratory, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, could help to predict if craft are susceptible to corrosion, allowing an early intervention to prevent costly damage.

The WISE-MP includes a gas monitor, weather sensor, chloride monitor and control box in an aluminum frame.

The WISE-MP (Weather Instrumentation and Specialized Environmental Monitoring Platform) includes a gas monitor, weather sensor, chloride monitor and control box in an aluminum frame, and can be easily transported and set up to monitor conditions at a site where aircraft are stored. The sensors together can be read onsite or remotely, and can indicate whether conditions might be conducive to the commencement of corrosion.

After preliminary testing at Wright-Patterson, the AFRL says the device will be deployed at the Naval Research Laboratory, in Key West, Florida, to test its performance under the extreme coastal conditions present there.

The plan is, after the test phase, to deploy the portable, user-friendly device at installations worldwide to catch possible corrosion before it begins.

“Our goal is to provide a durable and easily deployable sensing platform that can provide an extra measure of protection for our valuable assets,” said Chad Hunter, AFRL senior materials engineer.
