A game developer and writer has recently completed the crowd funding to create an atlas for virtual cities that will break down the architecture in everything from Fallout’s New Vegas to Silent Hill.

Developer and writer Konstantinos Dimopoulos’ Virtual Cities: An Atlas & Exploration of Video Game Cities will feature 40 cities and include full-color maps and illustrations alongside commentary and analysis of the urban environments.

A game developer and writer has recently completed the crowd funding to create an atlas for virtual cities that will break down the architecture in everything from Fallout’s New Vegas to Silent Hill.

Dimopoulos, who has a Ph.D. in urban planning and geography from the NTUA School of Architecture, started working for the gaming community in 2010 after the financial crisis hit Greece. He now works full time designing cities for games.

In an interview, Dimopoulos spoke about how important the details of the virtual cities are to the game’s plot.

"We are, after all, a pretty experienced urban dwelling species that can easily say when something feels off," Dimopoulos said.

"A city can helps amplify a game's atmosphere with its dark narrow streets and tall eerie buildings in a horror offering, provide with unique routes and good hiding spots in a stealth game, or even be used as a huge canvas for environmental storytelling.”

The book is available for pre-order now, though an excerpt lives online at publisher Unbound’s website, about Half-Life 2’s City 17.

Dimopoulos writes, “The architecture that still stands, itself a monument of better days, allows a simple reconstruction of the city's evolution from the neoclassicism of the 19th Century, to early modernism, to the Soviet functionalism that followed World War 2, to postmodern styles, to a truly alien, cold, and monolithic version of Brutalism.”
