Global inspection company SGS announced last week a strategic alliance agreement with oil and gas firm Baker Hughes on a new real-time software- and sensor-based corrosion detection solution.

Predictive Corrosion Management utilizes Baker Hughes’ ultrasonic sensing technology and analytics, and will be rolled out with the help of SGS, with its worldwide footprint and 95,000 total employees.

The System

The PCM system, according to SGS, involves a five-step process: manual ultrasonic testing inspection, ultrasonic testing sensor installation, 24/7/365 corrosion monitoring, data intelligence using cloud-based analytic tools and nondestructive testing reporting to customer needs.

The placement of ultrasonic sensors on pipes, tanks and other assets will help to monitor corrosion in real time while reducing the need for in-person manual inspections.

“This partnership with BHGE will enable SGS to broaden its asset integrity service offering with advanced digital inspection solutions that will greatly benefit our oil & gas clients,” said Francois Marti, SGS COO, North America.

“PCM is one of our core offerings to help customers make the invisible, visible,” said Holger Laubenthal, CEO of Inspection Technologies for Baker Hughes. “We are looking forward to working with SGS to accelerate deployment of PCM, a predictive digital solution that is becoming a benchmark for corrosion monitoring across several industries.”

Baker Hughes, a so-called “fullstream” supplier for the oil and gas industry, became a GE company last summer when GE purchased a majority stake in the oil and gas company; last month, GE announced it would be selling off its stock in the company in the coming years.
