The International Paint and Printing Ink Council announced last week that it will work with the World Ocean Council to co-present a special session on biofouling at the 2018 Sustainable Ocean Summit, to be held in November in Hong Kong.

The presentation, “Biofouling and Invasive Aquatic Species: The GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships Program – Opportunities for Business Collaboration and Implementation,” will explore how ship owners and operators can help stop the spread of invasive species by managing biofouling on vessels.

The International Paint and Printing Ink Council will co-present on the GloFouling initiative, aimed at stopping the spread of invasive aquatic species.

The session stems from the GloFouling Project, an initiative of the WOC that seeks to stop the spread of species via the hulls of ships and vessels. IPPIC is one industry partner in the project.

Antifouling Solutions

Researchers continue to develop novel marine coating solutions in order to provide effective antifouling properties without having a detrimental effect on the marine environment. One common antifoulant, tributyltin, was phased out in the 1990s and 2000s after it became evident the material was harming and in some cases killing larger marine animals, including sea otters and dolphins.

Another antifouling agent, copper, has been considered for regulation because it can build up in some marine organisms, but copper antifoulants are generally still legal worldwide.

In labs around the globe, scientists have in recent years worked on potential antifouling solutions based on graphene, seaweed, ultraviolet light, the carnivorous pitcher plant and more.

The Sustainable Ocean Summit will be held Nov. 14-16 at the New World Millennium Hotel in Hong Kong.
