There are road trips, and then there are road trips, but this one could beat them all: Head of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin recently proposed a transport route that could theoretically connect Great Britain to Alaska, via Russia, a nearly 13,000-mile highway that could both boost economy and make for one epic journey.

Yakunin told the Russian Academy of Science, where he presented his plan for the Trans-Eurasian belt development, that the endeavor would be “an inter-state, inter-civilization, project.”

Inter-Civilization Road Trip

Across Russia, the road would link thousands of miles of bridges and byways. As it spread into the west, it would connect roads in Europe, including the Channel Tunnel, which connects Great Britain and France. According to the Siberian Times, this would be the first modern route from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west.

Head of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin recently proposed a transport route that could theoretically connect Great Britain to Alaska, via Russia, a nearly 13,000-mile highway that could both boost economy and make for one epic road trip.

Yakunin was chosen to develop the project, along with academic Gennady Osipov, as well as the rector of Moscow State University, Viktor Sadovnichy.

If the plan succeeds—even though Yakunin noted that the greatest hurdle is a financial one, not feasibility itself—it could create new industry, new cities and a large number of new jobs, as well as encouraging development in Siberia and elsewhere.

The transportation route would cost trillions of dollars, according to Yakunin, but the economic benefits would outweigh the investment. Increased connectivity would help address the fact that up to 30 percent of young talent is leaving isolated regions of Russia.

“The idea is that basing on the new technology of high-speed rail transport we can build a new railway near the Trans-Siberian Railway with the opportunity to go to Chukotka and Bering Strait and then to the American continent,” said Vladimir Fortov, the Head of the Russian Academy of Science.

A very interesting project, but no mention of refueling, support systems, food, lodging, etc.
