An explosion at a Texas construction site Tuesday (June 26) afternoon has reportedly killed one construction worker and injured 15 more, and authorities are ruling the blast an accident.

What Happened

Around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, an explosion rattled the Coryell Memorial Hospital, in Gatesville, Texas, which was undergoing a $42 million construction project. Several emergency crews responded to the blast, including those from neighboring counties.

“It felt like a bomb had gone off, I will tell you that’s the first thought that went through my mind,” said hospital CEO David Byrom.

Bob Harrell, the Coryell County Emergency Management System director, said that the incident is believed to be an accident that stemmed from a gas leak, but that there is an ongoing investigation. Local television station KWTX confirmed that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is one of the agencies looking into the blast.

The project, led by firm Adolfson & Peterson Construction (Dallas) was adding 120,000 square feet of space to the facility and upgrading existing services.

According to OSHA records, the firm has had one “Other”-type violation in the past five years.

Officials are calling the damage "extensive," and all operations at the facility have reportedly been suspended, except for ambulance services, with all patients transported to nearby facilities. Officials have also not given an estimate of when the hospital will again be operational.

As of Wednesday, the names of the victims have not been officially released.
