Florida Institute of Technology, located in Melbourne, Florida, and home of the Center for Corrosion and Biofouling Control, will be hosting the five-day International Congress on Marine Corrosion and Fouling next week.

Attendees will participate in an interdisciplinary experience that focuses around combating biofouling and corrosion in the marine environment. The conference runs June 24-29.

Sessions include:

  • Functionalization of intrinsically conductive polymers by thiol-terminated hydrophilic polymers;
  • Erodible fouling-release coatings based on a hydrolysable network;
  • Antifouling & fouling-release coatings: Towards more environmentally friendly & long-term efficiency strategies;
  • Comparative analysis on of antifouling coatings on [a] ship’s hull; and
  • Determining reliable release estimates for antifouling coatings.

Attendees will participate in an interdisciplinary experience that focuses around combating biofouling and corrosion in the marine environment.

“It is ICMCF’s goal to bring experts from around the world together to discuss the latest basic and applied research advances in biology, microbiology, chemistry, physical chemistry, coatings, and materials to help face the challenges of biofouling and corrosion,” said Kelli Hunsucker, an assistant professor who works with the Center for Corrosion and Biofouling Control.

Other topics to be covered include non-paint alternatives to biofouling, such as ultraviolet light and aeration; policies related to chemicals used in ship hull coatings; and marine biofilms and corrosion.

The ICMCF was held once every four years until 2002, but is now held once every two years. The conference is open to the public and to students, but registration is required.

Clean surfaces simply don’t rust, and no other product cleans like HoldTight®102.

HoldTight®102 is a wet blasting additive that decreases the water’s surface tension, allowing it to get into the profile of the surface and remove ALL contamination, including salts, acids, abrasives, light oils, and greases. HoldTight®102 leaves behind no film and evaporates with the water, providing a surface that is thoroughly clean and ready for coating, rust-free for up to 72 hours.
