Three World Trade Center, now New York City’s fifth-tallest building, had its grand opening last week as the exterior construction from Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has officially finished.

The second-tallest building at the redeveloped World Trade Center site, 3WTC stands at 80 stories and 1,079 feet.

The Design

The exterior is wrapped in 10,000 floor-to-ceiling glass panels on a reinforced concrete core.

Three World Trade Center, now New York City’s fifth-tallest building, had its grand opening last week as the exterior construction from Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has officially finished.

Steel plays several roles on the exterior; girders and beams form a lattice K-shaped pattern along the sides of the tower, and all of the corners are shaped by the exterior glass and steel bracing system instead of column.

The building is mixed-use, supporting retail, office space and private residences. A 60-foot-tall lobby showcases a cable net glass wall that gives the illusion that it has “floated down” from the ceiling.

The building, which is aiming for LEED Gold, is also ventilated from higher up the tower, a feature that aids in supplying more outside air than required, according to the firm.

"The new 3 World Trade Center is a soaring symbol of the revitalization of downtown New York City and a testament to the enduring spirit of New Yorkers after 9/11," said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

"3 World Trade will be a hub of commercial activity and growth for the city and support our efforts to ensure New York remains the economic capital of the world."

The entire World Trade Center campus is being developed by Silverstein Properties and will still see Two World Trade Center (Bjarke Ingels Group) and a performing arts venue (REX).
