Today is the last day to submit an entry for Durability + Design’s second annual Elevation Awards, and we have counted down to the deadline with featured selections of this year’s nominees, giving readers a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Renovation + Retrofit” category.

Project: The Westin Tampa Bay

After the interior of The Westin Tampa Bay hotel sustained extensive water damage, building owner HEI Hotels & Resorts turned to contractor Stuart Dean Co. to waterproof and update the facade of the building. Instead of replacing the entire facade, Stuart Dean went with a slew of APV Engineered Coatings products to restore various surfaces.

After the interior of The Westin Tampa Bay hotel sustained extensive water damage, building owner HEI Hotels & Resorts turned to contractor Stuart Dean Co. to waterproof and update the facade of the building.

HEI needed the work to have a minimal impact on guest activities, which included mitigating noise and odors.

Prior to coating, all exterior surfaces were hand-sanded and pressure cleaned using a minimum of 2,500 psi to remove loose surface contamination, salt deposits and mildew. On areas where mildew was present, it was removed using a bleach-based solution, then the surface was rinsed with water.

Contractors used rollers and brushes to apply APV’s NeverFade line, a water-borne, low-VOC and low-odor fluoropolymer-based coating system containing Kynar Aquatec resin. The coating system also allowed the applicator to keep a nice wet edge, which can be difficult to do in the hot, humid Florida climate, APV notes. The team used the NeverFade Original Topcoat in custom-colored Westin Tan on brick surfaces, NeverFade Metal Restoration Topcoat in custom-colored Westin Granite around window profiles and custom-tinted W-1500 Universal Primer on both the brick and the window profiles.

“An additional benefit of applying a water-based system was that we would be faced with fewer environmental restrictions for application such as dew point and relative humidity thus assisting an accelerated schedule of completion,” said Rob Willis, SVP Design & Construction, HEI Hotels & Resorts.

“Even though work was interrupted due to the threat of a hurricane during the fall of 2017, Stuart Dean completed the project on schedule and we had virtually no guest complaints due to either odor or noise.”
