The Sherwin-Williams Company (Cleveland) has released its 10th annual Colormix Color Forecast, announcing in a press release a 42-color palette that the company expects to see in 2019. Shapeshifter, shown here, is a wide range of blues that aims to draw out a mysterious aesthetic.

The palette is broken up into six themes, which are meant to capture different personalities of those looking to a tell a tale with design.

“Every color in the Color Forecast, whether alone or when combined with others, tells a different story, a different riddle or different song, similar to the honesty found only in a written journal,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

“Our intent was to ask ourselves, ‘If this palette were a person, what kind of person might they be?’ making it important to bring forth a forecast that is personal and aspiring, yet attainable—how all design should be.”

Many of the palettes—developed by the Sherwin-Williams Color Forecast team, along with Wadden—center around darker tones such as navies of mauves with the occasional pop of color.

Enthusiast is the brightest palette of the bunch, and features vivid pops of blue (Oceanside), green (Argyle), red (Positive Red) and yellow (Gold Crest). “The Enthusiast palette is a fresh take on ‘maximalism,’” said Wadden. “It’s an opportunity to have fun and push boundaries with color.”

The collections are:

  • Shapeshifter – a wide range of blues (such as Blue Sky, Dark Night, Celestial and Endless Sea) line this palette, drawing out a mysterious aesthetic. “The atmospheric wisps of color, grounded by deep, mysterious blues, capture the unique space between technology and spirituality found in the Shapeshifter palette,” said Wadden.
  • Wanderer – a collection of neutrals, this set aims to invoke feelings of both warmth and freedom with tones such as Cavern Clay, Moth Wing, Caramelized and Dark Clove.
  • Aficionado – a mix of cool and warm tones, this palette runs the spectrum of richness to bring a classic style into the modern age with picks such as Merlot, Charcoal Blue, Ancestral Gold and Wheat Penny.
  • Enthusiast – the brightest of the bunch, this collection features vivid pops of blue (Oceanside), green (Argyle), red (Positive Red) and yellow (Gold Crest). “The Enthusiast palette is a fresh take on ‘maximalism,’” said Wadden. “It’s an opportunity to have fun and push boundaries with color.”
  • Naturalist – Reminiscent of colors found in a garden, this group mixes a range of pinks (Delightful, Rose Pink) with neutrals (Felted Wool, Misty) to create a chic yet classic look.
  • Raconteur – Another collection of neutrals, more muted, round out the forecast with shades that the company says can connect with anyone, including tones such as Chelsea Mauve, Orchid, Poised Taupe and Rustic Red.
